Raw Food for Pets

Smiling DogThe wave of raw food notion has spread much further than just a diet concept for us, humans. It should not come as surprise that animals can benefit from eating living foods just as much as we do. This idea was transformed into something that is now may be known to many pet owners as Biologically Adequate (Appropriate) Raw Food or BARF, for short. In spite of the odd sounding abbreviation, which hardly can constitute anything healthy, the concept of raw food for pets has the same goals as the raw food diet for humans.

The fundamental design behind the BARF is directed toward getting necessary nutrients and essential amino acids. It mimics the natural food sources if the animals were to be in the wild. Heat processing can reduce the amount of essential amino acid for cat in manufactured cat food products or even completely eliminate it. Feeding a raw diet with bones purge the need of dental cleanings for dogs. The meat-based protein is often supplemented with corn-based protein in dry foods for pets. It is believed that the digestibility of the later is much inferior and can be considered inappropriate for dogs and cats.

Raw food for pets is a controversial topic. There is a risk of foodborne illnesses posed by feeding unprocessed meats to animals. It may overweight the benefits of the BARF diet completely. Before pet owners decide whether they will lead their pets the raw food way, they should research the subject and consult a veterinarian. Remember that our pets rely on us to make the right choice, so be smart about it!
