Don’t Eat Larabars Anymore?
With all the commotion and controversy about Larabar being sold to General Mills, we thought it would be a good time to look into some of the other popular raw food bar companies and do some reviews.
Today we are going to be reviewing Pure Bars. What struck us immediately about the Pure bars is that they are actually certified organic and contain all organic ingredients; a big bonus!
In addition to being all organic Pure bars have a wider range of ingredients than the standard date/almond base with flavoring that you see in Larabars. Other ingredients that you will find in these bars are walnuts, cashews, and brown rice protein. These help to round out the flavor, texture, and nutritional profile.
Another bonus feature of these bars is that they are thin and flat as opposed to long and thick. We don’t know if it’s the size, but both of us agreed that the Pure Bars sit way better in our stomachs than any other raw food dehydrated bars we’ve had yet. Nice!
The only down side is the inclusion of dates. While dates are great for traveling, fill you up, and taste sweet, they don’t always sit well with everyone. Anyone into the whole David Jubb protocol (like in his Lifefood Recipe book) will probably not be eating these anyway. Jubb recommends avoiding dates because of their hybridization.
With all that being said, let’s get to the reviews…
Apple Cinnamon:
Apple cinnamon is the no-brainer of the snack bar flavors. Because of a popular chemicalized cereal flavor the apple-cinnamon combo is best known in its not-so natural state. What a different kick to have it raw!
While not our favorite Pure bar flavor, apple-cinnamon was not without its positives. A tasty, healthy, organic snack when you need one.
Wild Blueberry:
It was a nice surprise to bite into a dehydrated raw food bar that didn’t taste entirely like almonds and dates with a hint of “flavoring”. This Wild Blueberry bar actually tasted like wild blueberries!
It reminded both of us of those fig bars we used to have as kids that had different flavors, one being some blue goo resembling a blueberry mash.
Overall, a very satisfying bar in both taste and consistency.
Cranberry-Orange:
What we love about Pure Bars so far, is that you won’t find flavors like these in most raw food bars. Cranberry-Orange is an incredible combination that neither of us have had since our cooked food days.
ChocChip Trailmix:
This bar was our least favorite of the Pure Bars. Not that it was bad in any way, but it seemed like they couldn’t decide on the major flavor for this bar. It was kind of a mish-mash of everything. It had cacao nibs, but didn’t taste like chocolate. What flavor is this supposed to be?
Still was a nice bar to eat though. Not unpleasant, just unnecessary.
Cherry Cashew:
Yum! This bar was a pleasant surprise, because we were expecting a harsh dried cherry “bite” that we’ve gotten from similar raw food cherry-flavored bars.
The flavor on this one was even, rounded out and very satisfying. Other raw food cherry-flavored bars have left us with a sore feeling on the roof of our mouths, not to mention our teeth would become sensitive after eating them.
But the Pure Bar one has a subtle cherry flavor. Perfect.
Chocolate Brownie:
Wow.
This bar is absolutely incredible. Probably the best tasting and most satisfying dehydrated raw bar either of us have ever had.
It didn’t have that overly concentrated cacao bite or carob overtones that other raw chocolate/fruit bars have. We were both blown away by the flavor, consistency, and satisfaction with this flavor. Definitely the winner in this bunch!
The best part about this bar, is that it truly tasted like a chocolate brownie! Not an easy feat for a raw food bar.
Pure Bar Review Conclusion
We are very lucky to have had an opportunity to not only review these bars first-hand for you, but to have an opportunity to have them ourselves.
While talking with the Pure Bar representative who sent these bars to us, they were shocked to hear that both of our local Whole Foods stores didn’t carry their bars. They are hoping to get them in the Minnesota Whole Foods’ stores soon.
Equally surprising is that none of our 12 local co-ops carry these bars either. You can find Larabars literally at every grocery store around here as well as some Raw Revolution bars in some of our co-ops, but we’ve only seen the Pure Bars online.
Overall, these are our favorite raw food bars hands down and we would definitely buy them on a regular basis if our local stores carried them.
Luckily, you have the option of ordering them online from Amazon.
Hooray for options!
