Relax, Something is Being Done

If you haven’t been following the almond pasteurization ruling since it was instituted last year, we’ve got quite a lot of updates you can read from past posts on the issue: Almond Pasteurization.

Basically, all California (U.S.) almonds are now pasteurized thanks to a ruling from the USDA and Almond Board of California that was put into effect September 1, 2007.

But there is incredible news!

Fifteen almond growers and some wholesale nut handlers have filed a lawsuit last Tuesday, September 9 in Washington D.C., seeking to reverse this very silly ruling.

Just because a few people got sick from eating raw conventional almonds does not mean that all raw almonds are to blame. It’s large-scale factory farming practices that have affected non-organic almonds and caused them to be tainted with Salmonella.

From the Cornucopia article:

“The Cornucopia Institute has been articulating the concerns of family-scale farmers, producing organic, conventional and local food, about the potential fallout from the industrialization of our food supply. Foodborne illnesses, and the contamination of food from large industrial farming operations, are now motivating regulators to look at “technological fixes” rather than addressing the root cause of the problems & the widespread fecal contamination of the nation’s food supply.”

We just want to publicly thank the Cornucopia Institute for staying on top of our rights to fresh, unadulterated foods. You guys do an incredible job and we of the raw food community want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
